Here is a doozy.
The other day I went out for lunch with two of my co-workers.
The other day I went out for lunch with two of my co-workers.
I was sitting and enjoying my burger and fries, like any normal person would, and listening to a co-worker tell about a previous job he had. He worked in the government, so alot of the lunch chat was about politics. This co-worker is not a "Christian", and does not regularly attend church. He knows who I am, and what I believe, and seems to have no problem with any of it, but doesn't have a claim to it himself. As the conversation was getting into the whole Conservative vs. Liberal debate (not political party names), as these type of things tend to head towards...
My co-worker made one of the most profound statements that I think alot of us Christians need to hear and think about thoroughly....
Here is pretty much what he said...
"What is up with you Christians being so conservative? I don't know much about this stuff, but the little I do know is that this Jesus was NOT conservative!"
...thoughts?...

I think Jesus IS in a class of His own. I think we all try to put Him in a box. I'm pretty sure neither one of those categories fits our God of the Universe. Both sides have huge negatives.
ReplyDeleteGod is bigger than that.
Please remember that both liberal and conservative ideologies (and everything in between) were developed to try to deal with the problems of this world caused by sin. My guess would be Jesus would pick what is true from all of them and then tell us all the stuff no one got.
ReplyDeletehmmm...conservative or liberal in what sense?
ReplyDeleteThe gospels seem to indicate that Jesus was a huge supporter of excessive alcohol consumption, and yet most modern day Christians won't go near the stuff (and if they do, it's a one drink limit -- don't want to feel too tipsy!). I find this odd.
ReplyDeleteMy co-worker actually continued on to say..."like for example, most christians are against drinking, but jesus made @%@^ing wine!"
ReplyDeleteWhat do you think Tanthem? In the general term that Christians use, conservative being the rule driven, do this, don't do that, love God and the liberal being the feed the poor, nothing is wrong, yada yada. Obviously this doesn't complete the entire spectrum... but generally.
My co-worker and i continued to discuss the topic, and we both felt like Jesus would be neither... in that he clearly stood for certain truths, but also stood on the side of people. Unlike us, Jesus was known for what he was for, rather than what he was against. We suck at this...generally.
you're calling me Tanthem now? haha
ReplyDeleteat the risk of being overly simplistic - I think Jesus transcends these labels.
